"What Our Grandparents Used & We Threw Away" - Dudley Charlton
At our February meeting, Dudley Charlton gave an interesting and amusing talk entitled “What our grandparents used and we throw away”. He brought with him a large number of intriguing objects, and invited guesses about the possible uses of those things which we could not recognise. There was a pair of elaborately crafted iron pincers which were used for leading bulls, several very weird apple peelers, and a pair of wooden foot rests which were used by Hansom Cab drivers. There were also several gruesome objects connected with pulling teeth and making false teeth! Not the sort of thing that I would want to collect... There were many other things, but I can't recall them now. I should have made notes!
Our next meeting is on 16th March at 8.0pm when the talk will be “The Lost Villages Of Tide Mills.” Visitors are welcome.
Before then, the WI is organising a First Aid evening for anyone in the village who is interested. It will take place in the Village Hall on Tuesday 9th March, 7-9pm. Cost is £2 and will include refreshments.
In March there is also the WI Jumble Sale on Saturday 20th March at 2.pm in the Village Hall. If you’ve been spring cleaning and turning things out, please bring any jumble to the hall on Saturday morning.
