Rodmell Sustainability Group (RSG)

Rodmell Going Green
We are a small group working with Rodmell villagers to reduce our impact on the environment and help maintain our beautiful village as a viable and sustainable place to live and work.
What are we doing?
Cardboard recycling – we are putting a cardboard recycling facility in the village, to reduce the necessity for car journeys into Lewes or Newhaven tips. Potential sites have been identified, and it is now with the Parish Council for finalisation.
Carbon Footprint – we have carried out an exercise to calculate our carbon footprint as a village and compare it to others, both locally and nationally. These results have given us information about areas where we need to concentrate our efforts. Click here to see the results of the survey.
Recycling – We have a number of people in the village who are collecting used items such as batteries, print cartridges and mobile phones - and recycling them. This helps save multiple trips for recycling, or items ending up on landfill sites.

Cycle path – although we have made no progress with Lewes District Council and ESCC, we have obtained permission from a farmer at Iford for all Rodmell villagers to use an off-road path across his land from Iford to Lewes - which cuts out a lot of cycling on the C7 (this route may not be viable in winter). Maps will be available shortly.
Oil syndicate – we have a growing group of Rodmell villagers who coordinate their oil requirements in order to obtain bulk buying power. This enables us to order collectively to obtain a bulk price and reduce the number of oil deliveries to the village, thereby helping reduce congestion and environmental impact. Click here to find out more about the Oil Delivery Syndicate.
Information Leaflet – we have produced an information leaflet with many ideas on how we can move toward a greener lifestyle.
What do we want to do next?
Transport – we want to continue pursuing the idea of a cycle path from Newhaven to Lewes, and also to increase the frequency of our bus service - particularly an evening bus service.
Food Co-op – we are setting up a food cooperative for bulk ordering of food that can be delivered to the village. Anyone interested, please contact Sheree Foster by email
'Blue Sky' and long term projects
Power source – we would like to move towards a non-fossil fuelled village power source, whether it be wind, wood, or even water (from the river?).
Community Shop – we have, as a village, lost our valuable fruit and vegetable (and cakes!) delivery service provided for many years by Pat and Peter Jarrett, and we would be keen that this should be replaced with something to cut down on shopping trips.
